Walk at Drysdale
Explore our two day walks that cover 28km. You’ll navigate farm tracks, fence and creek crossings and wander through native grassland paddocks, past our sheep and cattle.
Shepherds are at work on horseback, with the Huntaway dogs at foot. Their whistles occasionally interrupting the banter as you make your way around the two carefully plotted routes.
Keep an eye out for peacocks, wild goats, deer and native bird life as you soak in the beauty of the pockets of native bush along the path.
A large five hectare lake surrounded by riparian planting has been fenced off and if you catch the light right, the hills are reflected on the glassy water. Further afield you can see Mount Ruapehu and Kapiti Island in the distance.
Lunch provisions for the walks are provided at home base, so you can pack your own lunch and eat it along the way at one of the seating areas, or wherever you choose.
The serene Mare's Tail waterfall on the Turakina River is the grand finale as you make your way back to the Shearer’s Quarters for nibbles, drinks and dinner.
Unwind, and connect with nature at Drysdale.

The Waterfall Walk is 17km, the more strenuous of the two walks. It’s 5-7 hours total, taking you along the winding Turakina River and past two large waterfalls. You’ll have lunch on the Turakina Tops and have plenty of time to take in the rugged landscape.
-
The shorter Lilyburn Loop is 11km and will take you approximately 3-5 hours. There’s lovely native forest and a quiet, welcoming lunch stop at Quinlin’s Lake, where you can catch your breath before you head for the hill tops to take in stunning views of Mount Ruapehu.
